The Wand of the Apprentice is the most basic of the Casting Wands, only being able to store 50 vis. It is definitely worth it to upgrade quickly, as it does not have sufficient storage to perform some of the later actions. This is the first wand you can acquire, necessary for all constructions related to Thaumcraft.

The casting wand is your most basic, but also your most important tool. It is what you use to craft objects, activate blocks like the crucible, and countless other tasks.
It stores a limited amount of magical energy (called percentagrams) that it uses to perform its tasks. As long as there are aura nodes nearby and you are carrying it, the wand will slowly recharge itself.
A negative percentage displayed on the wand percentagrams display above the hotbar indicates a discount on most vis costs.
